HEBREWS CHAPTER TEN.
Hebrews chapter ten is teaching basically that the sacrifice of Christ is BETTER THAN animal sacrifices of Judaism. There are FEARFUL VERSES in this chapter, that should never make a born-again child of God ever fear. A wrong understanding can make Christians forget about the security they have in Christ Jesus as Saviour, and cause them to drift into foolish concern. It is important to get the Bible’s teaching straight in regard to Hebrews 10:26-31, and hopefully this study will take away all worries. Shall we begin at the beginning of the chapter, and work our way to the fearful verses, and the context will open up the truth.
READ: Hebrews 10:1-4.
Verse 2 is very interesting. It shows that one who is saved has no more consciousness of condemnation because of sin. Romans 8:1; John 5:24
A key verse is verse 4. “It is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins.” Here we see that the same comparison between the O.T. Law system and the N.T. Grace under Christ system we have seen in Hebrews right throughout the book. This chapter is showing the reader that the Jewish sacrifices have lost their effectiveness now that Christ has come as the Lamb of God, died, and rose again from the dead.
Why would anyone want these O.T. sacrifices, if the Son of God has sacrificed
HIMSELF? Verses 26-31 are telling the Hebrews IT IS CHRIST JESUS, or JUDGEMENT.
No argument possible.
READ: Hebrews 10:5-7.
These verses show the obedience of the Lamb of God. The O.T. sacrifices
could only cover sin for awhile, but they could not utterly cleanse it.
So the SON of GOD came to be the Sacrifice which would take away sin for
those who would repent and be saved. We need to get proof of this important
point.
We find it in: 10:6, 11; Isaiah 1:11; Jeremiah 6:20; Hosea
6:6; Amos 5:21, 22.
Verse 5 is an exceedingly important verse. It is considered to be by Biblical scholars the first recorded words of our Lord’s in reference to His earthly ministry. Perhaps He spoke these very words as He left the Heavenly Palaces of glory, and joined Himself to that tiny mass of flesh in Mary’s womb! If we look at Psalm 40 we see these words in the O.T., they are like a prophecy. The primary meaning of those words is interesting. David was a sinner who despaired of his own sin. He found in the Law only an awareness of how much he needed MERCY! He could not keep the Law without fail.
Some say it was immoral for God to give an innocent victim as a sacrifice, But verse 7 shows Christ was in complete sympathy and agreement with the Father on this.
Why would Christ Jesus thank God for giving Him a body? Which He is really doing in verse 5 & 6. Because He has a human body which can be offered as a sacrifice - A REAL Blood sacrifice.
(See Galatians 3:19-29 to understand the purpose of the Law under Judaism).
[Refer Rev. 13:8 Foundation of the Worls]
Hebrews bears testimony to the fact that Christ is seen in Heaven
after His ascension -
Heb. 1:3;13; 2:7; 4:14; 6:20; 7:26; 8:1; 9:24; 10:12-13; 12:2
READ: Hebrews 10:11-14:
God’s own LAMB has accomplished things that the O.T. sacrifices could
never do, writes the author of Hebrews. Here they are listed:
a) A COMPLETE redemption. No need for any more sacrifices, ever.
b) A CURRENT sanctification, which is positionally ours just because
of Christ Himself.
c) A COMING glorification.
NOTE verse 14, “For by ONE offering he hath PERFECTED FOREVER them that ARE sanctified.”
The proof that "the saints" or "the sanctified" are positionally sanctified forever is found in ICorinthians, they were "unholy" in life [5:1-2; 6:1-8] but are twice said to be sanctified. [ICor. 1:2; 6:11]
WONDERFUL PROMISES make us realize that no blood-bought believer could be the subject of the FEARFUL VERSES, 26-31. These promises all come from the LAMB Himself:
READ carefully: verses 17, 19, and 22 and also see 35-37.
THE BELIEVER WORSHIPS IN THE HOLIEST BECAUSE OF THE LAMB.
READ: Hebrews 10:19-25.
Here we see THREE THEMES which are shown in other parts of the Book.
They are:
a) the expression of FAITH;
b) the patience of HOPE;
c) and LOVE with good works.
d)
Compare chapters 11, 12 and 13 which also emphasis the same three themes.
· Because we are saved and safe forever,
does that mean we have no responsibility
towards other believers?
· Can we just treat them like other people?
Verses 24, 25 certainly show us that we DO have a responsibility towards other believers in particular. Now these verses have been used in a most damaging way by some leaders of churches. People have been made to think that if they DO NOT ATTEND a DENOMINATIONAL CHURCH they will suffer the fate of the FEARFUL VERSES, 26-31.
Refer here to appendix one of Chapters 5-7
A well-known Australian leader’s newsletter suggested recently
that if one did not go to a church (a “recognized” one?) that person would
NOT go to Heaven! This is untrue, we do not lose our salvation ever, and
we will never of course lose it for not attending some compromising church
or other. The verses in Hebrews 10 DO NOT teach that. If they did then
SALVATION becomes ours only when we trust in church attendance, not Christ’s
shed Blood.
Let us look deeply at verses 24, 25. READ again.
We must not retreat from all fellowship as we “see that day approaching”
or as we encounter the Endtime apostasies and disasters. It would be easy
to do so; we can get very tired and sick of friction, disagreement and
fuss. We don’t have to go to a church building to “assemble.” But, we must
assemble together in order to ENCOURAGE one another, to be there for the
believers, to “exhort” or urge them along, to INCITE them towards good
works and love. It sounds almost aggressive. Aggressive action towards
one another,
“Come on! Keep going, don’t give up.
Do the right thing in LOVE;
don’t let the world drag you down.”
We actually bring “provocation” or “exhorting” upon each other (a word very striking here, as it is usually used in a bad sense) when we deliberately take notice of each others needs. We meet others’ needs; others are shaken by their own lack of love and respond, and so on. Not falling away from fellowship, but encouraging the others, and meeting not just for what self gets, but to be helpful and supportive.
NOTE: the Bible is not saying anything about gaining salvation if we go to church. It is talking about thinking of others who need our presence in their lives. Especially when the approaching “consummation” is upon us and the judgment of the world looms near.
WHY IS THAT?
Why do we need each other more then?
The Jewish or Hebrew believers were being urged in their day to HOLD
ON to the new faith. To not be dragged away from Christ Jesus, back into
Judaism again. We too are to assemble, as they were urged to, not giving
up because of difficulties.
Then we go on into the words written for them in 26-31.
DELIBERATE REBELS AGAINST THE NEW FAITH?
The Hebrews or Jews had to choose, go on to accept Christ as Saviour
and Lord of all, or go back into the defunct system of Law under Moses.
If they turn away from what they have
KNOWLEDGE of, there is no other way of salvation. If they do not want
the salvation found in Christ alone, then there is NO OTHER ATONEMENT FOR
SIN! If they did not want the sacrifice of the New Covenant under Christ,
then they simply trample under foot the blood of the New Covenant. These
Jews were wavering. They had head knowledge, inspiration from the Holy
Spirit – but if they would not move on and actually embrace Christ and
the New Covenant, and be saved, it is WILFUL rebellion and SIN against
God.
No Christ as Saviour? Then there is nothing else!
They will die in their sin. See 30-31.It is a fearful thing to fall
into the hands of the Living God without the shed Blood of Christ.
NOTE verses 32 and 33. READ.
The readers are urged that if they have encountered reproach and suffering for mixing with the Christians, then they should find inspiration from God to move forward, not go back. Verse 34 is a beautiful encouragement to look to Heaven and the rewards of those who go on into full salvation in the Lord Jesus.
There are other sentences from Habakkuk 2:3, 4.
“For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall
speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely
come, it will not tarry. Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright
in him; but the just shall live by his faith.” Verse 38.
VERSE 37 is of great interest:
Christ will come, nothing can stop that. It is accept Christ and live
by faith, or turn away and perish in disbelief and rebellion against the
Truth! No middle road! Verse 39 shows us clearly that the ones who are
SAVED will not draw back into “perdition” – they are held by the hand of
God.
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I
give unto them eternal life; and they shall NEVER PERISH; neither shall
any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater
than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.” (John
10:27-29).
Does that mean you can just live carelessly?
NO, for you will reap what you sow!
Sow wild oats and you will reap a crop of suffering in this world,
and be ashamed in the next and lose your rewards.
