romans Chapters 1 - 5.

1. THE COURT HOUSE OF GOD …….

Here we see GOD’S WRATH
His condemnation and the miracle of Justification is explained.

romans CHAPTER FIVE.
PART I.......PART II

The Court Room battle is over now. There has been an armistice, a cease-fire, signed.
Now God wants us to understand these wonderful things:

1. Peace with God;

2. Access to God;

3. Assurance from God;

4. Preserved in God;

5. What condemnation was all about;

6. The power of God’s Grace.

 This chapter is of such importance that we may have to spend two sessions on it to do justice to it. There are many, many false doctrines today, which have a ‘pretence’ at being Justification by Faith. Some of these are so subtle that the average churchgoer can hardly unravel their deception.  If we can grasp fully what the real justification by faith is, as presented in the Bible, then we will be able to spot a counterfeit. Millions go to hell every year believing they are saved, because they accepted a false gospel message! Banks often train their staff by only letting them encounter real bank notes by the hundreds of thousands, then if the staff sees a counterfeit note he/she can spot it straight away – they are so used to seeing real currency! I hope this study of Roman can do the same for you in regard to the real Gospel message of God in the Bible.

 PART ONE….

 Romans Verses 5:1-11.

Read from your Bible.

 Peace with God, Romans 5:1.

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”

We have peace with God BY FAITH.

There are seven results of justification in this passage, 1-11.

 In Romans 5:2

“By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” we see that we can have access to God based on our STANDING before Him, not on our STATE. There is a vast difference in Scripture between our STAND and our STATE as Christians. In Christ Jesus and His death for us a new standing before God was brought about – for everyone who will come by faith in Him:

Our STANDING in CHRIST refers to our position in Heaven because of Him,

and it never changes;

Our STATE refers to our condition on earth.

This may change from day to day, for better or for worse.

STANDING:

1 Cor. 15:1;

 “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;”

11 Cor. 5:17;

“Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

STATE:

Phil. 2:19;

“But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.”

Col. 4:7.

“All my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, [who is] a beloved brother, and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord:”

  Don’t think you are saved by your own STATE; you are saved only by your STANDING in Christ Jesus alone. Christians are privileged to have what no Jew or Gentile could experience in the Old Testament. We have access to God’s Throne itself.

  In the O.T. even access to the Temple on earth was limited:

  Something glorious happened when Christ died.

The veil separating God’s glory from sinful mankind was rent in two!

Thus giving all who would have faith in Christ access to a Holy God!

See

Matt. 27:51;

“And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;”

Heb. 10:19.

Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

  IN CHRIST OUR SINS ARE GONE!

When we realize this we will not be deceived into imagining that our STATE can lose us our salvation! We are completely justified because our sins are GONE in Christ Jesus. Christ died UNDER our sins – 1 Pet. 2:24; 11 Cor. 5:21. But, He has been raised again and is seated at the right hand of God, and we are IN HIM when we accept Him as Saviour and Lord.

ASSURANCE FROM GOD

 Romans 5:3,4.

3 “And not only [so], but we glory in tribulations also:

knowing that tribulation worketh patience;”

4 “And patience, experience; and experience, hope:”

Romans verses 3 and 4 give us such assurance that we can know that even trouble, strife, persecution and extreme suffering works together for us in God’s salvation and ultimate plan. We can glory in them because PATIENCE leads to EXPERIENCE which leads to HOPE.

  What is this about?

  All that we go through on earth must be met with patience and trust,

See

Heb. 10:36;

“For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.”

James 1:3; “Knowing [this], that the trying of your faith worketh patience.”

We need to experience God’s provision on earth;
We need to see His hand bringing us through our various trials.

  Psalm 94:12;

“Blessed [is] the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law;”

Gal. 4:19;

“My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,”

Eph. 4:14,15;

14 “That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, [and] cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;”

15 “But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, [even] Christ:”

We must learn to have the sure hope in the Lord which comes from patience and experience.
What this HOPE is about we will delve into right now.

  HOPE:
When we have “hope” in a situation there are three things involved:

  When we see the Lord delivering us from experiences here and now, we can see that he can deliver us or sustain us in the future. We then learn HOPE, not an impossible hope but an expectancy of the GOOD up in front of us.
Look back and see the faithfulness of God – and have that HOPE which cannot be frustrated.

  Here are some Bible teachings on this important subject:

  Ephesians 1:17-22;

17 “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:”

18 “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,”

19 “And what [is] the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,”

20 ‘Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set [him] at his own right hand in the heavenly [places],”

21 “Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:”

22 “And hath put all [things] under his feet, and gave him [to be] the head over all [things] to the church,”

  1 Pet. 1:3,4;

3 “Whose adorning let it not be that outward [adorning] of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;”

4 “But [let it be] the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, [even the ornament] of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”

  Titus 2:11.

11 “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,”

GOD has saved you; you are in this life at this time due to God’s plan for you.

He will keep you here on earth for now, surrounded by His love, and He will give you all the grace you need to live every day according to His plan – if you rely on Him and not on yourself. He will allow trials to happen to you and me, which we cannot fully understand while on earth, not all the time. But, He will make those trials a blessing to you. He has lessons you need to learn and grow in. These will cause us all, as believers, to grow in Christ Jesus, and produce the fruit in our lives, which are His gracious provision.

Andrew Murray says this:

“…in His good time He can bring me out again [of trials] – how and when He knows.

Thus: I am
      (1)… here by God’s appointment,

(2)….in His keeping,

(3)….under His training, and

(4)….here for His time.”

  Romans 5:5.

“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”

WE ARE INDWELT BY THE LORD HIMSELF.

  The Holy Spirit came upon the Old Testament saints, when God willed it, but He always left them again. In the New Testament the Holy Spirit has brought GOD Himself to indwell us forever. His love dwells within us, beloved of God! Here we see some deep teaching from the Bible, which depends upon the Greek word used in this sentence.  This word is “agapeo.” There are a number of words for love in the Greek language, but only three are used in the Greek New Testament:

STORGOS ~ a natural love which is a concern for one’s children, found in animals and people.

PHILEO ~ a friend’s love and affection, found in Romans 12:10.

AGAPEO  ~ the Divine love found only in God.

The last word is used in Romans 5:5“the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts…”

  Now, let’s get a good grasp of what is shed abroad on our own hearts, because we are born-again in Christ Jesus.
We want to actively co-operate with God in every way as we see what has happened inside us:

In the Greek New Testament this Divine love word is found 320 times. This love has nothing to do with the fineness or moral beauty of the one loved. It is totally a love, which depends on the Nature of the One of Love, God Himself. He loves the unlovely, the ungodly, the despicable and the spiritually righteous person alike. He loves because he cannot do anything else, God is love!

No man or woman who is unsaved can possibly love with the God kind of love, it is not in them. Peter could not love Jesus Christ with AGAPEO until he received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

(See John 21:15-17).

15 “So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.”

16 “He saith to him again the second time, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.”

17 “He saith unto him the third time, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.”

In John 11 we are told that Jesus loved Lazarus with an agapeo love, but Lazarus loved Jesus with “phileo”. But here in Romans 5:5 we see that the God kind of love is in our own hearts now, we are new creatures in Christ. This is why we can love those who bitterly deal with us, or who are unlovely and, in a natural way, unlovable to human beings.

  HERE ARE TWO WONDERFUL VERSES:

These two verses both have the Greek word “agapeo” in them:

John 3:16;

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

  Ephesians 5:25.
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;”

Notice that the Lord wants husbands to love their wives with the God kind of love!

Romans 5:6

For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.”

CHRIST DIED FOR THE UNGODLY!

 This important verse tells us what the heart of the Gospel of Christ is. “Christ died for the ungodly.”
God saves the ungodly, not the holy, self-righteous, pious religious person!

 What! Does God save a sinner who has no God at all?  Yes,

Christ meets the sinner on his own sinful level.

What love is this, to die for the wicked and helpless?

Christ died for you, and you are a sinner who needs Him.

“And almost all things are by the law purged with blood;
and without shedding of blood is no remission.” (Hebrews 9:22).

How did Christ save us? BY HIS BLOOD

Some will tell you today that we weren’t saved by the Blood of Christ but by His death.
Yes
, He had to die to shed His Blood.

But e hHeno, the Bible makes it plain that Christ’s Blood shed for us saved us.

Read  Romans 5:7-9.

7 “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.”
8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

9 “Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”

The Bible shows us again and again that the Perfect Blood of the sacrifice of God’s Son has made the way to the Heavenly Father possible.

Let us then do a brief study on this:

A THRILLING REALITY!

This Blood of Christ saves us from God’s WRATH
the Greek word orge” (or-gay) is often used for God’s wrath in the Bible.
It is a severe punishment, righteously and justly brought against wickedness.

Here are mentions of what the Blood of Christ saves us from:

·        Present-day wrath,
John 3:36;
”He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
Romans 1:18;
”For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness
and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;”

How do we know that we will not go through the Tribulation period,
which is to come upon the whole earth?

Because the word in 1 Thess. 1:10 for wrath is orge” which is the indignant vengeance of God which “is to come.” This can only be the Tribulation

The Blood has saved us from this wrath! Praise the Lord!

THE “MUCH MORES.”

Chapter 5 of Romans is sometimes called the chapter of the “much mores.”

Let us see these in all their glory.

Read them together:

Look at Romans 5:10 again.

“My salvation was purchased by His bleeding and is preserved by His interceding.”

Wilmington has said this:
Hebrews 9:24-26.

24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, [which are] the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

25 “Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;”
26 “For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.”
