The will of God is very like knowing the will of an employer, or the
will of a husband, or the will of a leader of some sort. To know anyone's
will is not a "serendipity" mainly, it is knowing that person, and asking
them, and being willing to do what they want. To know God's will is knowing
HIM, in a daily, hourly relationship with a Beloved Friend, Lord and Comforter.
It is obeying God's will in all the "little" things, implicitly as He enables.
It is a Living relationship, which is one of waiting upon the will of the
beloved Lord, as a servant awaits the pleasure of the master, or the wife
awaits to know how she can please her darling husband. To know the will
of God is to want to please God always, and never please self. It is surrender.
Read Romans 12:1-2.
A "living sacrifice", who lays down their own will and life, knows the
will of God. The main ingredient in knowing God's will is knowing GOD in
your ordinary existence. "Circumstances" do come into it, but never standing
alone, as a formula, not even to take the large part in our knowing God's
will. There is so much more. The following advice is much sounder than
the Dobson formula. It is about commitment, about seeking and knowing God
Himself, about deliberation and devoted prayer. Muller shows the delusion
dangers, and also shows us that there are a number of factors which should
line up together before we proceed.
1. I seek at the beginning to get my heart into such a state that it
has no will of its own in regard to a given matter. When one is truly in
this state it is usually but a little way to the knowledge of His will.
2.Having done this, I do not leave the result to feeling or a simple impression. If I do so, I make myself liable to great delusions.
3. I see the will of the Spirit of God through, or in connection with, the Word of God. The Spirit and the Word must be combined. If I look to the Spirit alone, without the Word, I lay myself open to great delusion also. The Holy Spirit guides according to the Scriptures, never contrary to them.
4. Take into account providential circumstance. These often plainly indicate God's will IN CONNECTION WITH HIS WORD AND SPIRIT.
5. I ASK GOD in prayer to reveal His will to me aright.
