Jay Adams ~ comments on psychology, page 76-77,
"The Christian Counselor's Manual":
"The Expert Knowledge (the psychologist) approach is based squarely upon the presupposition that man is not responsible for what he does. This is a fundamentally non-Christian assumption. Consequently, the methods used by the experts also turn out to be anti-Christian." ( Comment aside: remember that Dobson's premise depends on the outside environment being the culprit. The unwanted behaviour comes from poor conditioning, not from a fallen sin nature).
"Now usually there is an element of truth reflected by every false position,
Yet truth is distorted as it is reflected in a dented bronze mirror. Only
dimly does it approximate the truth itself. Yet we must not miss those
elements as we progress, because it is these that make non-Christian views
seem plausible and, therefore dangerous. The element of truth reflected
in Freudianism is that people do exert significant influence upon one another.
Obviously parents influence children, church authorities influence members,
etc." (Comment aside: Dobson as well has elements of truth. Children do
like rewards, and respond accordingly. Children will avoid bad behaviour
is they get a smack on the bottom, etc.)
"False teachings, whether they be the teachings of cults like Mormonism
or whether they be pagan systems of counseling, usually make gains by capitalising
upon those areas that have been neglected by the church. Rather than to
rush to adopt the views and methods of such groups, one should thank God
for the chastening He has given and return to Scriptures, the one and only
proper source of ALL that is necessary to life and godliness. Group therapies,
for instance, have shown the need for stressing community and fellowship
among Christians. The answer to the problem, however, is not to bring Integrity
Therapy or Transactional Analysis or Encounter Groups into the church;
rather, it is to search the Scriptures faithfully to discover what God
says about groups, beginning with such passages as Hebrews 10:24-25." (End
of quotes).
Just so with Dobson's methods. What he is showing as a need in the home is loving discipline. Therefore the way to find out how to discipline and train is to search Scripture, not bring in humanistic, corrupted psychology methods. Search the Scriptures faithfully to find out how GOD wants you to discipline your children. I would suggest it is not very complicated really, simple maturity in God gives the parent wisdom. Then a loving adult takes Godly control of the child's life, until he reaches adulthood. God leads believers to teach their children to honour parental authority under the Lord God.
Purpose/Policy Statement, by Martin and Deirdre Bobgan...
Psychotherapy is the integration of secular psychology counseling theories
and therapies with the Bible. Psychotherapy is also the intrusion of such
theories into the preaching and practice of Christianity, especially when
they contradict or compromise biblical Christianity in terms of the nature
of man, how he is to live, and how he changes....
...attempting to integrate psychological counseling theories with the Bible distracts believers, dilutes Scripture, dishonours God, develops the flesh, and debilitates spiritual growth."
A Quote from
FOUNDATION Magazine, Sept-Oct.1994, p. 35: published by the
Fundamental Evangelistic Association...USA.
"Because Dobson has taken conservative stands on several major issues (abortion, aids, etc.) many people do not realize how he is indoctrinating millions with psychological heresies. The books by Martin and Deirdre Bobgan, `Prophets of Psycho-heresy' I & II, thoroughly document Dobson's duplicity...." F.E.A.'s letter to `Despatch' (Nov. 29, 1955), explains how they hope to address, in their October/December, 1995 Issue of `Foundation', the inconsistency of the position of James Dobson and a Adrian Rodgers (Southern Baptist) concerning Bible separation. They state that these evangelical leaders provide a glaring example of the confusion and hypocrisy which results from disobedience to God's holy Word."
