"IS DR. DOBSON FOCUSING ON YOUR FAMILY?"
The following ARTICLE by Dr. Cathy Burns reveals more of the real Dr. James Dobson behind the "Christian" facade. YOU need to evaluate this man's teachings in the light of the Bible, under the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit, before a Holy God of justice, who has given into your hands , parents, precious living souls. Your children are not your own, they do not belong to the New Age social engineers either, they are entrusted to you for a season by the Creator, the Lord God. Your duty as Christian caretakers of souls lies in bringing children to the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord, and teaching them diligently from the Word of God. You have no command from God to update and "improve" on His instructions on rearing children by using the psychological reinforcing, conditioning techniques of the Godless!
Dr. James Dobson, founder and President of Focus on the Family in 1977, "holds an earned PhD. in child development from the University of Southern California, as well as honorary doctorates from Pepperdine University (1983), Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio [a Catholic university] (1988), Seattle Pacific University (1988), Asbury Theological Seminary (1989), Mid America Nazarene College (1992) and Liberty University (1993)."1
He has written 13 books. His first book alone, Dare to Discipline, has
sold over 2 million copies. 2 His "daily 30-minute radio program [on approximately
4,000 stations worldwide 3], is the second most widely syndicated show
in America (after Paul Harvey). [They] also produce other radio programs
that hold the third, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth spots in the syndication
standings. [They] publish the second most widely read religious magazine
in America (after Guideposts). [Their] videos are shown in more schools
than in churches."4 He has a 90-second radio feature which is carried on
over 100 of the largest secular radio stations in the United States.5 Focus
on the Family (F.O.T.F.) now has "more than 50 different 'ministries,'
employs more than 1,200, and has an annual budget of more than $100 million...
Other parts of the FOTF organization produce six other broadcasts, [nine]
magazines sent to more than 2.6 million people a month, and award-winning
books, films, and videos."6 His magazines focus on a variety of aspects.
There's Citizen to keep you updated on current issues. Clubhouse Jr. is
for children from 4 to 8 years old. For the 8 to 12 year olds there's Clubhouse.
The teen guys have Breakaway and the teen gals have Brio. For teachers
and private educators there's Teachers in Focus. The physicians' magazine
is called Physician. Parental Guidance gives "reviews and commentary on
the latest music, movies and television aimed at young people."7 Finally,
for the single parents, there's Single-Parent Family. Of course, his influence
doesn't stop there. Dr. Dobson has served "in a variety of consulting capacities
to the Carter, Reagan and Bush administrations."8 He was recently nominated
by Senate majority leader Bob Dole "in the newly formed Presidential Commission
on Child and Family Welfare"9 in the Clinton administration. This particular
Commission "will function under the direction of House and Human Services
Secretary Donna E. Shalala and will deliver its report to President Clinton
and Congress in 1995."10 His influence has even gone so far as to merit
the attention of the 1996 Republican presidential candidates Phil Gramm,
Alan Keyes, Lamar Alexander, and Pat Buchanan who have come to see him.
"Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole requested_and received_a meeting during
a recent Dobson trip to Washington, D.C. Dobson also has met privately
with House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who has not ruled out a presidential
run."11 Other presidential hopefuls are also planning on paying a visit
to him.
Since Dr. Dobson's influence is so pervasive, I believe it's necessary
that we take a closer look at some areas of his ministry and what is really
coming out of Focus on the Family. The mission statement adopted by the
F.O.T.F. Board of Directors states: "To cooperate with the Holy Spirit
in disseminating the Gospel of Jesus Christ to as many people as possible,
and, specifically, to accomplish that objective by helping to preserve
traditional values and the institution of the family."12 Sounds like a
noble objective, right? Well, as we proceed we should discover what kind
of "values" he really is promoting.
For example, let's start with a video that was produced by FOTF entitled "Sex, Lies & the Truth." Two versions were produced_one for the "Christian" groups and one for the secular institutions, such as schools, etc. The purpose of this 30-minute is to encourage sexual abstinence before marriage. The premise sounds good and is a worthy motive. The Bible clearly teaches sexual purity_both within and outside of marriage. This video, however, doesn't even promote modesty of dress.
"The following analysis was prepared by Christian parents who watched the 'Christian' version of the video when it was shown to the youth group at their local church in California:'1 The hosts of the video, Kurt & Chelsea Cameron, are movie stars that are posing as examples to youth viewing the video. They are both dressed in shorts; Kurt's are tight and Chelsea's are short-shorts cut up as short as they can go_not great examples of what the Bible describes as modest dress... [Kurt] only gives himself glory, not God, by abstaining.... "
'Viewers are forced to look at bikini-clad bodies, G-strings, cleavage, demonic/evil faces and images, etc., to get the point. One of the quotes Chelsea Cameron made was, 'You have to see the whole picture before you make a decision' (not true!).... "
'Chelsea said, "Look inside yourself and do what's right for you." ' " (This last sentence is disguised New Age terminology!)
The reasons given throughout the video for remaining a virgin are based on scare tactics, such as not getting AIDS, respecting yourself, not getting pregnant, etc.13 We are told that the "issue of sin wasn't even addressed" in this video.14 Besides, why should we turn to Hollywood to promote Christian values? Although it is possible to be moral without God, a moral person who has not been saved will end up in the same hell as those who are immoral. The truth is: Morality is wonderful, but we need more than morality for morality without salvation will never get anyone to heaven.
Besides, if this indecent video is the "Christian" version, I can only
wonder what the secular version must be like!
Just recently there was a concert at Focus for the employees. The "Events Management Memo" states: "This Thursday, June 15 [1995], at 12 noon there will be another great noontime concert! Focus employees and guests will have an opportunity to watch authentic Polynesian dancing performed by the Island Breeze Ministries in the Chapelteria from 12:00-1:00 pm. This extremely talented group of singers and dancers are (sic) in town for a fundraising Luau Friday night and is taking time to share an hour with us....
"Island Breeze is a ministry of Youth With A Mission (YWAM), founded by Sosene & Becky Le'au in 1979 in American Samoa....
"Don't miss this great opportunity to experience another culture's way of spreading the Gospel of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ."15
Spreading the Gospel through Polynesian dancing?! It doesn't sound to
me like the Gospel that Jesus Christ preached. In fact, this concert seems
to have been more of a pagan dancing session than anything else. One person
who attended this concert wrote: "This group came complete with loud music,
many drums types (sic) and what they called 'kingdom fun.' The 100 plus
dicibles (sic) included 'arobics' (sic) in which volunteers standing in
position kicked up first one leg and then the other much like a 'chorus'
line up, visiting kids and Focus adults took part in this event. The 'modest'
grass skirts worn by four of their party became fast moving female behinds
along with four males whose body movements were suggestive_all to the beat
of the music."16
How much of the true Gospel message is promoted through Focus? According to one eye-witness, "The Garden Song" was handed out to people in the distribution center to be sung. Some of the words of this song are:
"Grain for grain sun and rain, find my way in nature's chain, Tune my body and my brain to the music of the land."17
In the phrase "find my way in nature's chain" seems to be a reference to evolution! Of course, this doesn't surprise me since Dobson is a "theistic evolutionist."18 Rick Miesel states that Dobson "has endorsed and heavily promoted Hugh Ross's book, Fingerprint of God, which is a polemic for progressive creationism/theistic evolution, and thereby, is a denial of orthodox Christianity's literal/factual/historical interpretation of the first eleven chapters of the Book of Genesis. Dobson has given Ross a frequent forum (the Focus on the Family radio program) to espouse this heresy.
"For example, on Focus's April 17-18, 1991 programs, Dobson boasted that Focus on the Family helped give Ross's 'Reasons to Believe' ministry the initial publicity boost it needed to get started. Dobson also said that he agrees 'in an unqualified way' that the Earth is 3.5 to 4 billion years old. He also did not quarrel with Ross's claim that physical death existed long before Adam, and that God was fully responsible for this order of things!
"In response to a critical letter from Bible-Science Newsletter, Dobson
said that he takes the first eleven chapters of Genesis to be poetry, not
factual history, and thereby, is fully justified in making a figurative
rather than literal interpretation of them!"19 Another verse in "The Garden
Song" (mentioned above) states: "Plant your rows straight and long, season
with a pray'r and song, Mother Earth will make you strong if you give her
loving care."20
The mention of Mother Earth shows the pagan/New Age orientation of this song. There is no credit given to God who makes all things to grow, but it's "Mother Earth" who will make you strong. Of course, there's a number of things promoted by Focus on the Family that has New Age overtones. For instance, The Lion King, a video which sold 20 million copies in the first week, was endorsed by FOTF. This video contains "New Ageism, Neo-paganism, Hinduism, pantheism/environmentalism, astrology, and occult imagery" as well as the promotion of homosexuality.21 "A homosexual produced parts of the soundtrack, and two 'outcasts' (Timon and Pumbaa) represent homosexuals and the 'intolerant discrimination' they experience in our society. Sodomite Ernie Sabell, the voice of the Wart Hog in the film (Pumbaa) admitted: 'These are the first homosexual Disney characters ever to come on the screen.' "22 Some great family values, right? Wrong!
Al Dager ["Media Spotlight'] writes: "The Lion King packs powerful New Age symbolism and philosophy. Its theme, the 'Circle of Life,' is a variation on the cycles of nature: life, death, and rebirth [reincarnation], particularly as it relates to the theory of evolution... The accoutrements (sic) of shamanistic ritualism is graphically portrayed in the dedication of the baby Simba to the spirits of the earth."23 In spite of this, the August 15, 1994 issue of Parental Guidance, a magazine published by Focus on the Family, states: "Despite a few slight imperfections, The Lion King is a wholesome, brilliantly animated picture relating the importance of family and responsibility.' "24
So homosexuality, occultism, reincarnation, magic, etc., are "wholesome" and relate to the importance of the family and responsibility?! Also, can issues like this be considered as "a few slight imperfections"?
Other New Age items have been promoted through FOTF. For instance, in
the January 1993 Focus on the Family magazine there was an advertisement
for a new publication entitled A Better Tomorrow. This magazine for Christian
seniors advocated yoga, biofeedback, affirmations, imagery, etc., and had
an article by Norman Vincent Peale (a New Ager and 33rd degree Mason) in
its very first issue!
On December 15, 1994, FOTF had also highly recommended The Healing Journey for Adult Children of Alcoholics by Daryl E. Quick which was available through Focus. This book advocates visualization. Visualization is a form of creating your own reality. Llewellyn New Times, a New Age magazine which openly promotes witchcraft and all kinds of occultic practices, writes: "Visualization is the essence of the ability of bending reality to will. Do you know people who have extraordinary luck? Things always seem to work out for them. That is because whether they are conscious of it or not, they create their own reality with Creative Visualization."25 Another issue of this magazine reminds us that visualization "is a simple yet potent form of magick. All it requires is the use of your mind."26
Also, visualization (or imagery) is actually a form of hypnosis! In fact, Daniel Kohen, M.D., informs us that:
"The active ingredient in hypnosis is imagery."27 Prevention magazine states: "The better you are at letting your imagination run loose, it seems, the better your chances are of being hypnotized. 'The main thing is the imagination,' says Ernest Hilgard, PhD., a Stanford University professor and a pioneer in this field."28 It is also through visualization that spirit guides are contacted.29
One author notes that "Dr. Dobson, in his magazine Focus on the Family, is even involved in exalting a woman who 'studied... metaphysics,' and then taught her own children beginning at age five."30 (Metaphysics, by the way, is another word for the occult.)
Dobson (and/or his staff) have promoted a number of people who are New Agers or who have New Age leanings. For example, in November 1989 the Clubhouse magazine for children had articles on Mother Teresa.31 The readers were given the impression that Mother Teresa is a genuine Christian and that she is doing a great work for God. While she seems to be doing a good work in some areas, she is by no means a Christian. She is a New Ager and does not believe in being born-again and "considers Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and other religions to be acceptable ways to God...."32
Mother Teresa has said:
"If in coming face to face with God we accept Him in our lives, then we... become a better Hindu, a better Muslim, a better Catholic, a better whatever we are... What God is in your mind you must accept."33 She has also bragged: "We prayed with the Jews, the Armenians, the Jains, the Buddhists, the Hindus. It was extraordinary. All hearts united in prayer to the one true God."34
In 1985 Mother Teresa attended a conference sponsored by the United
Nations University of Peace whose featured agenda was a call to bring about
the New World Order.35 "Others participating in the 'Spirit of Peace' conference
included Marilyn Ferguson leading proponent of the New Age movement; Prince
Bernhardt of the Netherlands, commonly known as a leader of the one-world
secret elitist society, the Bilderbergers; 'His Holiness' Tenzin Gyatso,
the XIV Dalai Lama of Tibet; Zentatsu Richard Baker-Roshi, co-founder and
second abbot of San Francisco Zen (Buddhist) Center; Helen Caldicott, president
of 'Physicians for Social Responsibility,' an organization favoring U.S.
unilateral disarmament; Bishop Desmond Tutu, proponent of leftist revolution
in South Africa; and Robert Muller, Ass't Secretary General of the U.N.,
in charge of co-ordinating the work of 32 specialized agencies and world
programs."36
Another person Focus has bragged up is Pope John Paul II. In an editorial
in the January 1990 issue of Focus on the Family Citizen magazine, we find
that the Pope is called "the most eminent religious leader who names the
name of Jesus Christ."37 Isn't it strange, then, that New Ager/occultist
Robert Muller who has his own personal spirit guide "has proudly announced
that Pope John Paul II is 'the first New Age Pope' ?" 38
This Pope has met with voodoo priests in Africa and "found common ground with believers in voodoo, suggesting that they would not betray their traditional faith by converting to
Christianity. The Catholic church seeks a dialogue with voodoo followers...."39 Four years prior to Focus' endorsement of the Pope (1986), John Paul met in Assisi, Italy "with representatives from all the world's religions. Together they prayed and meditated for world peace. It was an amazing spectacle. There they were_snake handlers from Togo, sorcerers from South America, witch doctors and shamans from Africa, Hindu gurus, Buddhist priests and more. What a horrific assemblage! Yet, Pope John Paul II affirmed to them all that God was the father of all humanity, that they all simply worship God under different rays of light, but it was the same God for all. The Pope also assured the representatives of the different religions that it was necessary for them to work together for the good of all humanity. According to the Pope, they were all spiritual brothers."40
Not only does Pope John Paul II believe that we are all spiritual brothers, but he denies that we can receive forgiveness directly from God. A Los Angeles Times article stated: "Rebutting a belief widely shared by Protestants and a growing number of Roman Catholics, Pope John Paul II on Tuesday dismissed the 'widespread idea that one can obtain forgiveness directly from God' and exhorted Catholics to confess more often to their priests."41
Here is a man who denies that we can go directly to God and yet the
Focus on the Family Citizen magazine, tells us that the Pope is "the most
eminent religious leader who names the name of Jesus Christ."42
The New Age connections go even further. On September 17, 1984, Norman Cousins was scheduled to be on FOTF. Many calls of protest were received at Focus and, at the last minute, the program was pulled. However, one year later, this program was sneaked into the schedule. This time the program listing didn't mention Norman Cousins' name, so no one knew to protest it. Norman Cousins was an evolutionist. He wrote in his book The Healing Heart: "Human beings are unique not solely because of millions of years of evolution have enable them to stand upright but because of their sensibilities and sensitivities...." This book also endorses all kinds of mind control techniques, including transcendental meditation. He is also a humanist. He enthusiastically mentioned: "We are seeing a new breed of scientific humanists and humanistic scientists." On a few occasions, Cousins refers to "the gods" which should be obvious where he stands on the issue of a personal and knowable God.
The New Age movement's universal proclamation is: "Man created God in his own image." The political goals of this movement include a mandatory New World Religion, establishment of a "universal credit card" system, establishment of a World Food Authority, World Health Authority, World Water Authority, etc., a universal tax and a universal draft. The main vehicle to push all of the above, as well as to introduce the Maitreya, their New Age Christ, is the Planetary Initiative for the World We Choose. This organization in turn has organized The World Council of Wise Persons,' and guess who heads the invitor committee? None other than Norman Cousins! You can find that information in their official organ, The Initiator, issue #2. Another interesting note is that in the transmissions from "Lord Maitreya," Maitreya says: 'I am the Initiator of the little ones"! Do you see where the name of their paper came from?
Two people who have been asked by Cousins to sit on The Council of Wise Persons are Carlos Romulo of the Philippines, who played a leading role in the organization of the United Nations and who was a former president of the U.N. General Assembly, and Buckminster Fuller, the avowed enemy of organized religion.
David Spangler, an opened and avowed Luciferian, also worked very closely with Norman Cousins! Additionally, Cousins helped to found the Planetary Citizens, an organization which states that their purpose is to aid the "World Servers everywhere." Now, the purpose of the World Servers is to serve as the "vanguard for the reappearance of the Christ," so it is not hard to see that the purpose of Planetary Citizens, by extension, must be the same. Of course, this group lets it be known loud and clear that the New Age Christ is not Jesus of Nazareth, so who else could it possibly be but the Antichrist that they are so eagerly working for and awaiting?
Why did Dobson have Cousins on his program? I really don't know why,
but I do know that he was warned by numerous people not to have him on.
He has disregarded all these warnings. The day the program was aired, his
co-host, Gil Moegerly, introduced the program like this: "We are fully
aware that Norman Cousins does not come from an evangelical Christian perspective,
but all truth is God's truth. If it's true, it came from God, and the next
twenty minutes we feel are true and valuable and will make a contribution
in your life."43
Before we discuss the contents of this particular program, let's look
at Gil's statement that "If it's true, it came from God...." Is all truth
God's truth? I can say that my neighbor is living in adultery_and it's
true_but is this a statement that came from God? The telephone directory
contains names and phone numbers_a true statement_but is this God's truth?
Satan told Adam and Eve that if they would partake of the Tree of the Knowledge
of Good and Evil that their "eyes shall be opened... knowing good and evil"
(Genesis 3:5). This was true for verse 7 says that "the eyes of them both
were opened" and they knew good and evil, but was this GOD'S TRUTH? Of
course not. Satan used deception and deceit yet he used partial truth.
Also, at the end of Jesus' 40 day fast in the wilderness, Satan appeared
unto Him and said: "If thou be the Son of God, cast Thyself down: for it
is written, He shall give His angels charge concerning Thee: and in their
hands they shall bear Thee up, lest at any time Thou dash Thy foot against
a stone" (Matthew 4:6; Luke 4:9-11). The statement made by Satan is true
for it was written in Psalm 91:12, but was this God's truth? No! Obviously,
then, all truth IS NOT God's truth, so just because a statement may have
some truth, we cannot claim that it definitely comes from God.
Of course, Gil's statement was just a cop-out and a cloak for their deceitful presentation and endorsement of this program. What was aired was an extracted 20-minute segment from a four-hour tape by Norman Cousins. The particular portion that was chosen related a story of mind over matter where a person used mind control to manage pain and bleeding. This story should have been recognized for what it was_a promotion of a New Age technique used by yogis and other occultists. What was even worse than this endorsement took place at the end of the program. It was stated that the stipulation was that for Dobson to use that segment, a particular toll-free number had to be given. I called the number and reached the Nightingale-Conant Corporation. A catalog of their videos was sent to me. This catalog contained videos on yoga, affirmations, positive thinking, and other New Age-oriented techniques.
Since then I have received repeated mailings to get cassettes by Deepak Chopra, a well-known New Ager, who practices Transcendental (occult) meditation, imagery (visualization), Ayurveda, etc. He also prescribes meditation, yoga, visualization, and other occultic practices for his patients.44 The brochure from Nightingale-Conant informs us: "You'll get in tune with the universe and the higher forces [demons!] that structure all material creation... Create your own environment and control life situations... You'll love every minute of your climb to the stars..."45 There is a P.S. added which reads: "With your six audiocassettes of THE HIGHER SELF, you will also receive a pyramid card to chart your progress to a Higher Self_the peaceful, unified, harmonious, wholly fulfilled person you'll soon become."46 I just wonder how many others receive such information and think it must be okay since this toll-free number was given on Dr. Dobson's Focus on the Family radio program. I wonder how many people have been led into occult techniques_thanks to indiscretions on the part of Focus.
Let's move on to another area of concern. FOTF offered a free "Youth Culture Calendar" (Resource #10848) to those who requested it. What's on this calendar? Glad you asked! At the top of this calendar we read: "I Wanna Rock My World... Through Prayer."
"They're tops on the charts. They're among America's most popular media shapers. And, they're now on my prayer list. I pledge to pray for these pop stars each day. Why? I dare to be different. I want to be instrumental in changing my world... and I believe in the power of prayer."47
What's wrong with praying for rock stars? Absolutely nothing. These
people are in great need of prayer and we should pray that they will get
saved. The problem, however, is that the list contains not just the names
of 30 rock groups that are to be prayed for, but their addresses are also
given. Groups like Nirvana, Metallica, Naughty by Nature, Madonna, 2 Live
Crew, Slaughter, AC/DC, Color Me Badd, Motley Crue, Prince, Ozzy Osbourne,
Ice-T, and Guns N' Roses are listed along with the address where they can
be reached. How many of these teens will write to their idols and then
end up on the mailing list of these groups_only to be bombarded with filth
and enticements to buy these secular (and vulgar!) recordings? In the first
place, many teens enjoy this music and getting the address of their idols
is considered to be something wonderful to them. In fact, so many times
when a so-called Christian recording is advertised or announced in so-called
Christian magazines, the article often states that this particular "Christian"
group sounds like The Grateful Dead, or Prince, or Motley Crue, or some
other secular and ungodly group. This is supposedly used as an enticement
to get "Christian" teens to listen to "Christian" music but with the same
sounds and beats as the secular musicians use.
While we're on the subject of "music," let's discuss a rap tape that was produced by Focus on the Family. As mentioned earlier, Breakaway is one of the magazines for teens published by FOTF. In 1993 there was a "Radical Rap" contest where the readers of Breakaway were supposed to send in their original rap songs. 40 winners were then chosen and their raps were placed on a cassette tape which was called "Breakaway Raps." Along with these 40 winners, the Breakaway staff did their own rap song. I have listened to this tape and it is extremely blasphemous_especially the song by the Breakaway staff. At one point they refer to Jesus Christ as "the Big J C." As disrespectful as this is, the manner in which it was done was even worse. At another point they are talking about "the Word" and then one of the guys chimes in with "Nerd." It is stated that this part will have to be edited_which, of course, they knew they had no intention of doing. This is obviously a lie since they knew that they would not edit that section. Another part of this "song" states that they are down with the Word and one of the staff says that he is down with the yo-yos. All this is done while talking about the Word_who is Jesus Christ.
A little later on in the tape the Breakaway staff is talking about the so-called Christian group DC Talk. One of the guys mentions that another one of the staff had inside information about DC Talk. They then asked him what kind of underwear one of the DC Talk boys wears. He told them that he wears "green polka dot boxers" and then another guy brags that "You heard it here first, ladies and gentlemen!"48 Is this even remotely Christian? The Bible tells us in Ephesians 4:29: "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers." Ephesians 5:4 adds: "Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks."
With what has been mentioned in these pages, it seems quite obvious that Dr. Dobson and his staff are focusing on your family_but his focus is not on the family values and morals that he pretends to endorse. The family is actually being undermined with subtle New Age/occult techniques, blasphemous rap music, watering down of the precious Word of God, etc. It's time that we take a stand and refuse to let his "values" be imposed on us. It's time to get back to the Bible and forget the "wisdom of men," because following man's wisdom may lead you to the New Age Christ which is the Anti-Christ. As Paul wrote in I Corinthians 2:5: "Your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God."
