HE CAME RIDING ON AN ASS.
.

“Why didn’t people love Jesus? Why did they want Him to die?”
Nardia and Tahnee were concerned when they questioned their church youth leader.
He had been discussing the cruc-i-fix-ion with the kids one night. Tom scratched his head and said,
“there are a lot of reasons for that. Many people didn’t want to turn from their wrong doing. Others felt Jesus was a threat to their own power in the Jewish temple. Some thought that Jesus would cause unrest, because He would become the pol-it-ical leader of the Jewish people - and they might try to put down the rule of Rome!”

He then went on to tell the kids about Jesus being sent by God the Father to give His life.
“So it all happened anyway because GOD loved the sinful people of this earth so much that He gave His own Son to save us. So it wasn’t just the silly, way-ward people who caused His death. We all did really, by our own sin!”

Almost three days BEFORE the crowds at Jerusalem cried out, “crucify Him!” they were saying something quite different. It was a thrilling time. Jesus Christ had come riding into Jerusalem on an ass. The crowds loved Him then, or maybe they just thought He would save them from the Romans who ruled over them. They waved palm branches like they were flags! And they cheered Jesus as He rode down the streets.

They sang out, “HOSANNA [ hurrah ] to the son of David!”

Here it is from the Bible:

“And the disciples went, and did as Jesus command-ed them,
And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him there-on [ Jesus sat on the ass ].  And a very great multitude [ crowd ] spread their garments [ cloaks ] in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way [ laid them down for Jesus to ride over. Like a red carpet in a way ].
And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.  And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?  And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.” Matthew 21.

Why did Jesus come riding on an ass?
Why not a grand horse?

Well He was showing He was part of the leader-ship of Israel. The leaders [Judges] in Israel in the early times rode on white asses, this was before Saul was king. Later the kings rode on horses. And riding an ass showed that Jesus was not only a King but also a servant. Here is a pro-phecy  from  the Old Testament, written in 487 BC [ I know you will remember about what prophecies are ]:

“ Rejoice greatly [ have great gladness ], O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just [ good, right and honest ] and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”  ( Zechariah 9:9).

The crowd soon changed their minds about Jesus!
They were horrible to Him three days later, and wanted Him dead! Have you ever been accused of doing wrong when you are innocent? It is not pleasant is it. Jesus was innocent of all wrong, but He did not defend Himself. He let Himself be treated as though He was a guilty man. Can you see why He did that? He did it because you and I and all other people on earth ARE guilty, and He took our place. Satan must have laughed when He saw Jesus being taken to Cross to die. But he didn’t have the last laugh! Jesus even defeated death! WOW! What a Saviour He is! Jesus was the bravest, best and strongest man who ever lived. He was GOD!

Tomorrow more about Jesus’ death and His rising again. See you then!
