Getting to know
God together.

In an old book I own called “The Christian’s Secret of a Happy Life”
there is a story about a girl:
“A little girl once expressed this feeling to me, with a child’s out-spoken candor
[ honesty ]. She had asked whether the Lord Jesus always forgave us for our sins as soon as we asked Him, and I had said, ‘Yes, of course He does.’  ‘Just  as soon?’ she repeated doubt-ing-ly. ‘Yes, ‘ I replied, ‘ the very minute we ask.’  The little girl said, ‘ I cannot believe that. I should think that He would make us feel sorry for two or three days first. And then I should think He would make us ask Him a great many times, and in a very pretty way too, not just in common talk. And I believe that is the way He does, and you need not try to make me think He forgives me right at once, no matter what the Bible says.’”

Do you think something like that?
When you do wrong do you feel
that surely Jesus must want you to suffer a bit?
Maybe you even find it hard to believe
that the Lord will really forgive you at all?

But He does want to, and He wants to make you clean and new again as fast as possible. Doing wrong things can make us very unhappy indeed! Far more than when other people do wrong things to us. We feel guilty, and this hurts inside!  To be happy again in Jesus we need to tell Him all about it, be honest too! No use pretending that other people are wrong and you are not. No use telling Jesus about what you did or said, and then not letting Him forgive you at all. He wants to forgive you right away, and He wants you to be happy and clean of sin.

Once Nardia did something very wrong, but she would not forgive herself or let the Lord forgive her either. It happened one night after tea. She was really irritated with her Mum because she felt she was so bossy! Mum told her to pick up her clothes and put them on the chair, and Nardia lost her temper!
She yelled,
“ I hate you! You never let me alone. I wish you weren’t my mother!”
And she burst into tears of fury, and said a swear word under her breath.
Mum made her go to bed at once!

For days afterwards Nardia was unhappy.
She kept telling the Lord that it was her mother’s fault.
“I had every right to be angry, Mum is so bossy!”
But every time there was prayer time, Nardia felt bad inside, she knew she was wrong all right! Finally she just had to make it right. She told the Lord she knew she was wrong, and asked Him to forgive her. But she could not really believe He had! She kept punishing herself inside. At last she came back to Jesus and let Him forgive her.  She trusted God’s Word, and Jesus cleaned away her sin - just as He promised He would in the Bible. And she was happy and peaceful again in her heart:
“If we confess our sins, he is faith-ful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all un-right-eous-ness [ wrong and sin ].  If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. “ ( 1 John 1: 9 ).

It was important for Nardia to trust Jesus to forgive her!
If she had not trusted Him she could have been in a bit of a mess!
She could have said to herself,
“Jesus must want me to be sorry for a few days,
and make up special prayers to tell Him so, or He won’t forgive me.”
Then all her peace in God would have gone away, and she would have been still miserable. Of course she had to do a very hard thing, she had to say sorry to her Mum as well.
We should always say sorry if we have hurt others by our sin.
But Mum had shown Nardia how to say sorry,
because she herself would always apologise if she did wrong to others.

Do you know what the word ‘repent” means?
It means to change your mind about sin, and to turn away from it.
God will give you power to do that, just depend on Him.
Jesus Christ saves us from the punishment for sin, and from the power of sin.
And one day He will take us away from even the presence of sin.

“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus
hath made me free from the law of sin and death. “ ( Romans 8:2).
