WISE MEN AND THE STAR..
What was that “star” that the wise men followed?
Where did they come from?
What about the evil king that tried to make them his spies?
Yes, there are lots of interesting things to think about when we read the Bible verses that tell of the birth of Jesus Christ.
The Bible tells us this:
“ Now when Jesus was born in Beth-le-hem of Jud-aea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jeru-salem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jeru-salem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
And they said
unto him, In Beth-le-hem of Jud-aea: for thus it is written by the prophet,
And thou Beth-le-hem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the
princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Gover-nor [ a leader ], that
shall rule my people Israel.
Then Herod, when he had privily [ in private ] called the wise men, en-quired of them diligently [[hard and carefully ] what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Beth-le-hem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.” (Matthew 2:1-8).
That wicked king Herod never intended
to worship Jesus at all! He was very jealous and afraid of a leader from
God coming to his area. He did a most horrible thing to try to get rid
of the baby who was God come to earth.
Read on in the book of Matthew and you will see all about it - in the verse Matthew 2:16.
Read too about how Jesus was kept safe and escaped in Matthew 2:12-15.
Find the Bible verses yourself, it is good practice.
“ When they
[ the wise men ] had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star,
which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over
where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced
with exceeding joy
[ lots of delight and happiness ] . And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frank-in-cense, and myrrh.”
How many wise
men were there?
It doesn’t say in the Bible that there were THREE wise men. But there could have been because they gave Jesus three gifts, perhaps one gift each.
How could a star lead those men all the way from their home right to Jesus? Well, it couldn’t have been an ordinary star. It was most likely a heavenly light created specially by God for the grand occasion. An ordinary star is a far away fiery globe of gas a million or so light years from earth!
Who were those wise men and where did they come from?
Bible scholars believe that they would have been religious men who studied the heavens - as-tron-o- mers. They say the men could have come from the area of Mes-o-pot-amia. These wise men would have known about the writings of Daniel in the Old Testament. He wrote a lot about the coming of the Lord Jesus. Daniel had been the prime minister of Babylon and Persia about six centuries before Jesus was born. The wise men probably found Jesus when He was about two years old. The star appeared that first night, and it took a long time for the wise men to follow its light. Jesus is called “the young child” in Matthew 2: 9,11,13 & 14. Evil Herod killed all the babies two years and under, not just tiny babies. So we know Jesus was not just a new-born when the wise men found Him.
