Getting to know
God together.

( I said yesterday that your devotions would not come again for two days! I made a mistake. I thought it was Friday. )

In your  Bible you might have Zacharias’ name spelled, “Zechariah” but this is the same man.
What happened next?
Well, His wife did become pregnant, and she hid herself away for five months - it was pretty strange thing for an old lady to be having a baby! When John had grown for six months inside his mother, that great angel Gabriel was sent to speak to Mary. Two baby boys with very special futures ahead. Mary came to visit Elizabeth’s house. Elizabeth lived in a city of Judah. Elizabeth was Mary’s cousin, and Gabriel had told Mary about the baby John, who she was going to deliver.
An old lady who couldn’t have children having a baby?
What a wonderful miracle. And Mary was to have a baby when she wasn’t even married and the baby’s Father would be GOD. NO earthly father at all! The Bible says this in Luke 1:37:
“For with God nothing shall be impossible.”

Have you got things you think are impossible?
If those things are truly of God then HE can make them possible -
“For with God nothing shall be impossible.”
Maybe you have something you want to happen in your family. Perhaps you have something important that you want to happen next year. Then tell God, He will give your heart’s desire, if you are willing to obey Him and trust Him. Elizabeth’s greatest desire all her life would have been to have a baby. Now when it was impossible, God made it possible. Not only that, but John would be the messenger that would announce  the Lamb of God when Jesus started His ministry.
“Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. “ ( Psalm 37:4).

And God caused a wonderful thing to happen. When Mary came into the house and greeted Elizabeth, the baby inside her “leaped” - he gave a big jump! And then Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit of the Lord. She sang out with a loud voice the words that God gave her:
“Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb ( the baby Jesus ).” ( Luke 1: 42).

After John the Baptist was born, his father old Zacharias got back his voice! It happened like this. People were saying that the name of his baby shouldn’t be John, they said it should be “Zacharias” after the father. Elizabeth said “John”, but her relatives and friends said no one in the family was called that! So they made signs to Zacharias to ask for his wishes to be made known. And he wrote down, “his name is John.” And straight away he could speak again and praised God.  People became afraid after that. They realised that John was no ordinary baby.  Something pretty odd was going on they thought!

Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit of the Lord, and gave a wonderful message, a “prophecy”.  It is written in Luke 1:68-79. We will look at a few of the words he spoke. You might like to read them all in your own Bible:

This was what Zacharias said about John:
“And thou,  child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the the Lord to prepare his ways; to give knowledge of salvation....”

This was about Jesus Christ:
“Through the tender mercy of our God, where-by the day-spring from on high hath visited us. To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. To guide our feet into the way of peace.”  (Luke 1:78,79).

See you in two days time for more!
We will see then what “the dayspring” is.
