Getting to know God together.

.
THE BRUSH TURKEY.
One day we saw a brush turkey in our rain forest back-yard. She was building a mound of dry leaves. It is like a big nest, but the egg goes under the leaves, it doesn’t sit in a hollow like a sparrow’s egg sits in a nest. We thought, “that brush turkey might lay an egg there.” Then one day latter on she spread all the leaves out again, and we thought, “she is not going to lay an egg after all, sad!” But we were wrong, she must had laid the egg all right. One day much later we were having morning tea on our front verandah when a little turkey chick ran by. Now that chick lives here, and has grown into a lovely big turkey, with a bright red neck and black feathers. It is a female and has become quite tame. She likes our chooks and goes in their pen to eat food. She sleeps in our camphor laurel trees at night.

Our pets, the dog and the three cats, know that brush turkey is a kind of pet too! They never chase her away, or get upset when they see her running around.
How do they know we want her to stay?
They let that brush turkey chick grow up happily running around in the yard, and never tried to hurt her! The cats and dog always respect other pets on our property, and give them a fair go. When our pigeons had babies in nests I have seen our cat Fluffy Dax peeping into the nests, checking out the tiny pigeon chicks - but she would never have dared to hurt them or eat them up! Even enemies like cats and birds can be friends when they understand that this is what they should do. Yet, our cats would chase away wild birds, and I am sure would eat up poor wild chicks if they could get them.

How about you?
You are much more valuable and important to God than animals and birds are.
Do you give other kids and adults a fair go?
Do you let them enjoy their lives, and give them peace?
Or are you selfish and only think about having a fair go yourself?

I hope our pets wouldn’t put you to shame! Some kids are pretty horrible really. They always want to make themselves happy and comfortable in the house, but never think how happy and comfortable other people are.
For instance,
do you complain about wanting your own television programme, and don’t care who wants to watch something else?
Do you grab the last nice cake on the plate, and forget your sister or brother?
Do you make a big fuss about Dad driving you to your friend’s place when you know he is very busy with business things?
Do you spread your books all over the living room when Mum’s friends are just about to come for coffee?
Do you start a fight with your brother or sister just when other Christians come to the door to visit your parents?
Do you turn your music up loud when your sister or brother is doing their home-work?

There are lots of ways that kids can stop other people having a “fair go!”

For our over-seas readers I should explain that Aussie people like to give others “a fair go.” That is one of our national sayings! Christian believers should want to give a “fair go” to others in their homes - even more than people who don’t know or love Jesus. He is the One Who taught us about un-selfish behaviour.

Here is a Bible verse about that:
“A new command-ment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.  By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. “ ( John 13:34, 35).

What does that verse really mean?
If our Christian homes are not places where people show love, then how will other people who don’t love God know we are real Christians?
If Jesus loved us so un-selfishly, we have to be un-selfish too.
How will people know that God has given us new life in Jesus Christ, if we are selfish and nasty and don’t love others in our own homes?
Even Fluffy Dax, Dolly the dog, Ginger and Ebony can give other animals and birds a fair go! So you should too!

“Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.“
( Matthew 10:29-31).
