Getting to know God together.

The twins had been thinking a lot about animals and humans. They loved animals, and felt sorry for them. The New Age “greenie” program  on TV had made them  wonder whether humans were just too bossy over the animal world.
“We think we can treat animals like they were lower than us!
After all we are just animals ourselves!”
Zach said quite crossly one morning.
Dad looked up from eating his bacon and eggs.
“You’ve got that wrong, Zachary.
Humans are higher than animals,
we have special qualities that animals can never have.”
“But-but-” Zach spluttered,
“we even do awful things like eating the poor animals.
You are eating a pig right now!”
So Dad got out God’s Word, the Bible,
and they all looked at what HE says about humans and animals.

Dad read from Genesis 1:26,27:
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have do-min-ion over the fish of the sea, and over fowl of the air, and over cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
So God creat-ed man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and fe-male created he them.”

That verse tells us so much!
People, men and women, boys and girls, are made very specially - in God’s image. Animals are not made like that. There was a special council held in Heaven between God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit over creating mankind. This is the “us” in this verse. God wasn’t speaking to angels here, because people were not made in their likeness. On the sixth day of creation the mighty council took place, and the very special, highest and most com-plex of all creatures were made by God - man, people. Then God gave people “do-min-ion” over all the animals. The fish, the birds, the cattle, all the creatures of the forests, even the snakes, lizards and insects.
What is do-min-ion? God made people the rulers over the animals.

But are people just animals too? No, because they have a very special nature in them. When Adam and Eve lived on the earth, before they sinned, they had an eternal spirit. The animals have only got spirits which stop living when they die. We humans were made in God’s own image, but we have fallen in sin and God must re-new that spirit in Jesus His Son. That is why we must be “born-again.” But all humans have so much more than animals in them-selves.

Let’s look at what they have got:
Humans can think about all sorts of things that animals can never think about.

Animals cannot do and feel or experience any of those marvellous things.
We have been made pretty wonderfully alright.
We are NOT just animals.
No wonder God made us the bosses over the animal world.

All humans can come back to God, and be made new in Christ Jesus’ image. We lost God because of sin, but Jesus makes that all right again. When God made people in His likeness, He made both men and women in His image.
“Man” in that verse means “mankind” the whole human race.

GOD came to us and took on our image when Jesus came to earth!
He did that to save us:
“But made himself  [ Jesus Christ did ] of no rep-u-ta-tion, and took upon him  the form of a servant, and was made in the like-ness of men: “ ( Philippians 2:7).

Tomorrow - should we eat meat? Is it cruel?
