Getting to know God together.

Did you know that real Christians are soldiers?
That doesn’t mean that they fight other people. It means they fight against evil and evil spiritual forces. When we are soldiers in battle against evil we do not want to get hurt. We want to be safe and protected. So God has given us a wonderful passage in the Bible that tells us about the armour and a weapon for the soldiers of the Lord.
I am sure you all know what armour is. In the Bible days it was described as being like a Roman soldier’s outfit. Armour covers a person over, and makes it hard for the enemy to get at them - especially to attack our parts which can’t stand damage. Like the heart and the head.

In the Bible it tells us to “Put on the whole armour of God. “

You can read this in Ephesians 6:11. To stand and battle evil we must be properly dressed. We will look at all the battle dress of the Christian soldier, in Ephesians 6:11-17. I think it is exciting to be a warrior for the Lord, one who is on the right side! You and I are in the Lord’s Army. Well, what is the armour and how can we put it on?

(1) The first piece is the Belt of Truth in Ephesians 6:14a;
(2) The next piece is the Breastplate of Righteousness in Ephesians 6:14b;
(3) Then there are Boots in Ephesians 6:15;
(4) Then there is the Shield in Ephesians 6:16;
(5) On to the Helmet of Salvation in Ephesians 6:17a;
(6) And last is the Sword of the Spirit in Ephesians 6:17b.

We have to be sure we have our armour on as Christians so we can stand firm against the devil. He comes along with all sorts of schemes to defeat us. The Bible says we are to put our armour on so we can:
“...stand against the wiles (tricks) of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:11).

OK - do we have to go down to the Christian book shop and buy some special clothes?

No, of course we do not. This is all about “spiritual” protection for this wicked world.
Let’s start looking at the special armour God wants us to have:

The Roman belt not only came around the waist, but it came down to the legs. The Roman soldier had a wide girdle made of leather, it had cross shoulder straps studded with metal plates, and thick strips hanging down to protect the lower body. God wants to show us that the Truth is our best way of staying safe. The Truth is found in God’s Word. The more we trust God’s Word, the safer we are from the enemy of our souls and evil. And we need lots of Truth to make us aware and sound. This is “the Belt of Truth.”

The Roman breastplate was usually made of leather with metal strips. It was a coat with no sleeves. Sometimes important men had it covered with gold or silver. God wants us to be safe with the righteousness of Jesus Christ. We can be filled with Jesus Christ’s righteousness, or goodness and holiness, when we ask God to fill us with the Holy Spirit. We then have on the Breastplate of Righteousness.

THE BOOTS are for “the gospel of peace.”
Look at Ephesians 6:15. The Roman soldier’s boots had hobnails on the soles, and leather straps around the ankles and the front of the feet. When we make things right with God by trusting Jesus as Saviour and Lord, we can go forward and attack the devil because our walk ( our boots) is right with God. We then have peace with God, and we are “shod” with the gospel of peace.
Our boots are on!
