Getting to know God together.

Last time we were looking at the Armour of God we saw the Belt of Truth, the Breastplate of Righteousness and the Boots. They speak of being prepared for the battles of life! You will need to have God’s Word as your Truth, and to be trusting In Jesus to make you a Godly, good person, and to be sure that as you walk in this world you have peace with the Lord God. What comes next in the Armour?

You can see this in Ephesians 6:16.
The Roman shield was shaped like a door, and it was made of glued planks wrapped up in canvas or calves skin. It was a great protection for the soldier. It had top and bottom edges of heavy iron. If a soldier lost his shield it was really hard to stay alive! He would hold it in front of him and turn away the swords and the arrows of the enemy. God is showing us here that we should be shielded by faith in Him. If we just tackle our problems by ourselves, and don’t have faith in God, we will get into a lot of trouble in life. Who is the enemy that attacks us? It is Satan Himself, and he uses people too who ‘tempt” us to do wrong against God.  “Tempt” means to talk us into sin, or make sin look attractive, something we will want to do. Do you know there are 7,000 promises of God in the Bible? All to do with helping us be safe in this world, and grow in God. When you trust in God and His promises, it is like having a shield in front of you, a Shield of Faith. Below are three of these promises. If you can find them yourself have a look. If you can’t, get an adult to help you:

Isaiah 41:10; I Corinthians 10:13; I John 4:4.

Find it in Ephesians 6:17a.
All of the Roman soldiers wore metal helmets, except the one who carried the standard ( a banner on a pole), and he wore a wolf’s head! The helmets the others wore were mostly made of shining orange bronze, over iron. This protected the most important part of the soldier - his head. What does God want us to understand here? Well, it is called the Helmet of Salvation, so God wants us to know that to be a soldier of the Lord, and be safe in the battle, we must be saved or born-again. That is wearing the Helmet of Salvation.

We see this in Ephesians 6:17b.
This sword is called “Machaira” in Greek in the Bible, and is a short sword that was kept in a pouch called a scabbard. That scabbard hung on the Belt of Truth. The Bible says this:
“and the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.” Now how can the Word of God, our Bible, be a sword? Well, when Satan comes along and “tempts” you to doubt God or do wrong, you can fight him with the Sword of the Spirit, God’s Word. You can say, “but God said this, and this and this! Take that!” God’s Word has promises and commands, and comforting words, and it tells us how to have victory over sin.

He sure is wonderful to give us such armour and spiritual weapons. Can you see that this is picture language? I hope you can, for our armour and weapons are spiritual, not made of wood and iron, and  God intends us to put our armour on.

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles (tricks) of the devil.....
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to with-stand in the evil day (when things go badly wrong), and having done all, to stand.”
(Ephesians 6:11,13).
