Getting to know God together.

Did you know that Jesus had brothers and sisters?
Perhaps you thought He just had Mary His mother and Joseph.
The Bible tells us the names of our Lord’s earthly brothers, but the sisters names are not mentioned. The people who heard Jesus speak was astonished that He knew so much and had such wisdom! No wonder, I would say. For some of them had seen Him growing up just like any boy.

Jesus was always speaking to the people in parables (His special stories).
Large crowds were listening and responding to Him with great joy. Then He went to His own country of Nazareth. Now this was the place where everyone just thought of Him as the ordinary Jesus, the man who worked with wood like Joseph. They could hardly imagine what was making Jesus act the way He did, because they did not believe in Him being the Son of God. How you ever noticed how hard it is to impress your own family or neighbours? People who knew very famous people when they were just children often can’t accept them as being famous or talented as adults. It was something like that with Jesus’ neighbours and family.
Let’s have a look at the Bible:

“And when He (Jesus Christ our Lord) was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue (Jewish worship place); insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence (where) hath (has) this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?
Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren (brothers), James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?
And his sisters, are they not all with us? (they live around here) Whence hath (has) this man all these things?

And they were offended (annoyed, put out) in him. But Jesus said unto (to) them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.”
(Matthew 13:54-58).

Jesus meant that people will listen to men speaking about the Lord in a special way, as long as they are not their own family or neighbours. Do you know Jesus did not do any mighty miracles of healing or anything else there, in His own country.
Because the people did not trust or believe in Him.

One day Jesus was speaking to a very large crowd of listeners, when His mother and brothers came and called Him to come away from there! They thought He was making a fool of Himself most likely. Jesus had friends from the times of His youth, and they thought He was going a bit strange. They said, “He is beside himself” (he is emotionally upset). The friends tried to take Jesus away from speaking to the crowds. Later, of course, when Jesus had risen from the dead, all His family and friends would have known the Truth. That Jesus Christ was the Messiah, God with us. You can read about this in Mark 3:21 and Luke 8:19 & 20. Also Matthew 12: 47 & 48.

Jesus said a wonderful thing about brothers, and sisters and His mother (His family). It is about you and me and everyone who wants to follow Jesus Christ and obey God. Jesus said this:
“For who-so-ever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.” (Matthew 12:50).

I have accepted the Lord as my Saviour, and want God’s will in my life. Is that true of you? Then we are the spiritual brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ! His very own family.  WOW!
