WITH THE HEAVENLY FATHER -
......DEVOTIONS FOR LAMBS. No. 238
There is only one mention in the whole Bible of the word “ladder.”
It is in Genesis 28:12.
It must be a pretty important verse, then.
The FIRST mention of a word is always important in God’s Word.
But here we have the ONLY mention!
What was this “ladder” all about?
It is a strange and exciting story, and it has to do with the twin we met last devotion -
Jacob, the grabber of his brother’s heel and birth-right.
Here is the story right from God’s Word.
I will add little comments to help you get the picture:
“And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran.
[These were two places where people lived].
And he lighted upon a certain place [ Jacob came to a certain place], and tarried there all night [ stayed the night ], because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold [ look ] the angels of God ascending [ going up on the ladder] and descending [ coming down] on it.
And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I AM the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest [ where you are lying ], to thee will I give it, and to thy seed [ your children and grandchildren - on and on ];
And thy seed shall be as the dust of the
earth [ there will be so many of them
], and thou shalt spread abroad to the
west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south
[ your family line will spread all over the place ]:
and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
And, behold, I AM with thee, and will keep
thee in all places whither thou goest
[ where-ever you go ], and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee,
until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
And Jacob awaked [ woke up ]out of his sleep,
and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.
And he was afraid [ it was all a bit too much for him ], and said, How dreadful [ not so much frighten-ing but strange and odd ] is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. [ The place where Heaven and earth meet ].
And Jacob rose up [ got up ] early in the
morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it
up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
[ Jacob made a Mon-u-ment of it. A special one to remember God ].
And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.
[ Bethel means “House of God ].
And Jacob vowed a vow [ he made a very important promise ], saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment [ clothes ] to put on,
So that I come again to my father's house
in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:
[ remember that Esau hated Jacob? And Jacob was scared to go home? ]
And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt
[ shall ] give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee. [ That ‘tenth’ was called a ‘tithe’.] ” (Genesis 28:11-22).
So Jacob, who was a cheater and a grabber, turned with all his heart
to the Lord God.
And the Lord used him for His wonderful plans for the nation of Israel.
Can you see how forgiving, kind and loving God is?
He wants us all to know He is merci-ful to sinners.
He wants to make you and I into Godly people too! Wow!
“Thank You, Heavenly Father, for being such a forgiving God. Thank You for sending Christ Jesus to our earth, to show us just how much mercy and love You have. I know that I can trust You forever, and you will make me safe and happy.
