Getting
to know God together.
.
David
was just a boy.
But
he believed that God could help him and make him strong.
David
didn't think God was some sort of Santa that was there to give him presents,
or
something. Some people think that.
They
only want God to be there to give them money!
David was willing to trust God in any danger or real need.
There
was an awful battle, long ago.
The
men of Israel had a terrible foe who was leading an army of men called
Philistines. His name was Goliath, and he was a giant 9'4" tall!
He
was from a tribe of giants that lived on the earth in those days.
This
giant yelled out,
"if
you send out your best man I will fight him,
and
if he wins,
we
will all give up and be your slaves!"
David
had been sent to the battle place by his dad, Jesse,
to
bring three of his brothers their lunch.
They
were men, you see, and were fighting.
Not
one of those soldiers of Israel was game to go and fight Goliath.
And
I don't blame them!
But
David thought about his God.
He
remembered when he was looking after the sheep, and a bear came and he
trusted God and he killed the bear.
And
another time he killed a lion with God's help.
David
said, "I caught that lion by the beard
and thumped him"
So,
you guessed it, David was sure he could kill the giant with Almighty God's
help - who was 9'4" tall!
He
went out against Goliath with five stones he had found in the river.
And
a sling shot, a "shanghai" we call it in Australia.
What
a shock that giant got when a young boy came out against him.
He
was furious.
And
David said, "I come to thee in the
name of the Lord of hosts, ...whom thou hast defied (thumbed his nose at)."
Then
David just swung his shanghai
and
sent a stone right into the middle of Goliath's head,
right
between the eyes.
He
must have fallen with an awful thud. He was dead!
David
didn't have a sword, so he grabbed the giant's huge sword,
and
swung it and cut the ugly head right off.
Later
he took that head back to Jerusalem.
You
know what? the rest of the enemies ran away as well, the whole army did.
David
was not strong, he didn't have huge muscles like a weight-lifter.
He
didn't have an atomic blaster gun, like some comic hero.
He
was a REAL boy who trusted in the REAL God Almighty.
You
can trust God, he wants you to feel safe with Him as your All-powerful
protector.
Girls
as well as boys can have faith in Almighty God.
Deborah
led a whole army to victory.
David later became the king of Israel.
A
PRAYER:
"I
want to be made brave in You, my God.
I
trust You to care for me. Amen"
EXTRAS FOR TEENS AND BETWEENS
David
was the youngest of eight sons. He was considered to be a no-one
when it came to fighting battles. God chose him to fight the giant because
He wanted to show that the victory was God's, not man's. If we want God
to be the One who gets the honour, not ourselves, then God can and will
do mighty things through us as well.
That
giant was covered in armour, and had a helmet made of brass on his head.
The
only vulnerable spot was between his eyes, and God took that stone right
there! Have you got a situation or problem you are finding impossible?
Tell
God about it, and have faith in Him to give you the victory.
He
is the very same God who gave David the victory.
He
loves you, and will bring you through.
Read
the story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17.
"Through
God we shall do valiantly (bravely):
for
he it is that shall tread down our enemies."
(Psalm
60:12).
Tell
your Heavenly Father about all your fears and worries.
Have
faith in God to help you.
