Getting
to know God together.
Our cat, Fluffy
Dax, had six kittens one year. She was a good mother too.
We gave her a
special box in the office to keep the kittens in.
It was just a
cardboard box lined with newspaper, but it was snug and safe for the kittens,
and she could be with us all the time.
The kittens were
born in our bathroom at half past five on my birthday.
It was very exciting
to see how God has planned for new life to come into the world.
Have you ever
seen anything born like that?
Those kittens as
they got older were always getting in mischief.
They climbed up
out of the box.and tried to wander away.
Fluffy Dax always
went and got any kitten who was out of the box and carried it back in her
mouth. They mewed and complained, silly things.
They would have
gotten lost or hurt if she had let them wander around by themselves, doing
what they wanted. They were so tiny and didn't know about danger.
We kept one of
those kittens who is now grown up.
He is a really
big cat called Ginger Tom. Now he looks after his mother.
A wild cat, an
ordinary cat that has no owners, sometimes comes to our yard and bullies
our cats. Ginger Tom attacks him and protects his mother. She stays on
the verandah and watches while the boy cats fight. Ginger Tom still likes
boxes in the office and sleeps in any empty ones he finds. I guess he remembers
when he was kitten in his box with Mum and his brothers and sisters.
Kittens and children
have to obey their parents when they are young.
This is God's
way of keeping them safe. You might say that this is not fair because parents
don't have to obey anyone.
But you would
be wrong. Grownups obey too.
They obey the
policemen and those who make the laws of the land.
And they obey
the bosses at work.
Most of all Christian
parents obey God, because He knows best and wants us to be safe and happy.
Even Jesus Christ obeyed His Heavenly Father.
One day when you
grown up you might look after your Mum or Dad.
Just like Ginger
Tom takes care of his mother.
But when you are
a child you need them to care for you.
"Children obey
your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
Honour your
father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise."
Ephesians 6:1,2.
EXTRAS FOR TEENS AND BETWEENS
As children grow older they find
the desire to "do their own thing" growing stronger within them. It can
be difficult for teens to obey parents and teachers. No longer just kids
they often want to express themselves in ways outside the home. This is
all part of growing into an adult. Remember though that obedience is right
in the Lord, and that all people have to obey someone or some rules. Society
could not run smoothly at all if we all just did our own thing.
Obedience and laws are there
to keep us safe and happy, and are set in place by the Heavenly Father.
Read Ephesians 6:1-4; and
Hebrews 13;17.
