Getting to know
God together.

The Bible often talks about our Lord Jesus as THE ROCK.
What does this mean?  It means a lot of things, but of course it mainly means that Jesus Christ is trustworthy, and we can depend on Him. This is picture talk. He is the One we can build our lives on. He will keep us firm and safe:
“Therefore who-so-ever heareth [hears] these sayings of mine, and doeth [does] them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain des-cended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded [ made safe and sound]  upon a Rock.” (Matthew 7:24,25).

Have you ever seen a house that was built on a solid rock? We always have to build our houses on something that is firm. But some houses have such a wonderful foundation that they are much safer than others. Some houses in our town are not very safe, they have a rubbish dump under them!  They are OK at the moment, but if an earthquake came, or the rubbish below them finally shifted a lot, then the walls would crack and down they might go! Oh dear!  We live on the coast of Queensland, and some houses that are close to the beach have had big trouble. The sea has come pounding in and lots of the sand has been washed away from the beaches. So the houses have had less and less land under them. Some people have had to give up, and pull their houses down. They had a poor foundation. If they had built on a great rock, however, they would have had NO trouble at all. Lots of people are like that when they build their lives. They build on the rubbish dump, or sand, of selfishness and greed, not on Jesus as Saviour and Lord.

Jesus Christ is the Christian believer’s Great Rock. He is our Rock of salvation. He gives us God’s water of Life. Water comes from the Great Rock.  ( Exodus 17:1-7):
“ And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. “ (I Corinthians 10:4).

Jesus Christ is the Rock who will always give us what we need. He is the Rock of Ages. That means He will be our strength for ever and ever:
“Thou wilt [God will] keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee [ whose mind is made up to love God]: because he trusteth [trusts] in thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is ever-lasting strength: “  (Isaiah 26:3,4).

God built the Christian Church on Jesus Christ. You belong to it if you have trusted Jesus as your Saviour. It is not a building, it is company of believers, all over the world. Here is what God says about that church:
“And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.... And I say also unto thee...and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail [win] against it. “ (Matthew 16:16,18).

But Jesus will come one day to be a Rock which will destroy the wicked. There are evil people in our world. One day God will stop all wickedness, and there will be no killing, or wars, or cruelty, or stealing - and to do that He will send Jesus Christ as the Rock.
He will then be the Great Rock which will put a stop at last to all troubles on the earth. Those who are rebels against God won’t get away with it any more. Jesus Christ will fill the whole earth with His Holiness and goodness:

“...and the Stone [the Great Rock] that smote [ crashed into] the image [ all the nations of the earth] became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.”  (Daniel 2:35).m
