“Who through faith subdued [ conquered] kingdoms, wrought [ did] righteousness, obtained [ received ] promises, stopped the mouths of lions, Quenched [ put out ] the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant [ acted bravely ]in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens [enemies from other countries ].
received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not
accepting deliverance [ they wouldn’t escape and let God down ]; that they
might obtain a better resurrection [ being raised from the dead]:
And others had trial of cruel mockings [ they were picked at and laughed
at ] and scourgings
[ whippings], yea [yes], moreover of bonds [ chained or tied up] and im-prison-ment:
They were stoned,
they were sawn asunder [ cut up], were tempted , were slain[ killed] with
the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute
[ no money], afflicted [ lots of troubles], tormented [ very distressed];
(Of whom the world was not worthy) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And these all, having obtained [ received] a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect. “
That was quite a long quote from the
Bible. In Hebrews chapter eleven it names lots of names. You will know
about some of these heroes: Enoch, Noah, Moses, Joseph, Sarah, and even
a woman called Rahab, who turned from being an awful sinner to serve
the Lord God. She was very brave. Lots more names are there. All
of them were believers who God says were brave and true because they had
faith in Him:
“Choosing rather to suffer affliction[ suffering] with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season [ for a time]; “ (Hebrews 11:25).
Jerry was a brave boy. He was a hero in his own way. The kids in his neighbourhood were always getting into trouble with the police. They were tough and rough. They laughed at Jerry because he was a Christian, but he never ever gave up and joined in their bad ways. It took a lot of courage to say “no” to them. Jerry was the kind of hero that is “unsung.” I mean by that that no other person really knew that he suffered for God. There are no Bible verses with his name in them. But the LORD GOD knows about Jerry, and other kids just like him. God sees when you do right things and refuse to do wrong, even when other kids taunt and tease you. You too are a hero of the Lord when you do that kind of brave act.
“ Now the just [ good Christians] shall live by faith [ in God ]...” (Hebrews 10:38).m
