Getting to know God together.

There is a famous tower in the Bible, its story is found in the Old Testament. It is called the Tower of Babel. Knowing about this tower helps us answer a number of questions. How come the people of the world speak so many different languages? Why are we in different countries? Is it good to make One World with everyone in the same big global village? What does God think about a huge union of nations? These are big questions for kids to think about, but the Tower of Babel makes it all clear.

Long ago mankind decided to make a big union of everyone and be as powerful as God’s Heaven. All people spoke the same language in those days. It was many years after the Great Flood had gone down. The people had found a huge plain in Shinar, and they lived there. They decided to reach right up to Heaven, that is like challenging God and making themselves mighty like Him.  The Bible says:
“And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top [may reach] unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. “(Genesis 11:3).

So they built a gigantic tower. Bible scholars tell us that the Tower of Babel was made with seven stages, each was made of different coloured bricks. These stages, round sections, stood for five planets, and the sun and moon. From the base or bottom the colours were black, orange, red, gold, yellow, blue and silver. It must have looked fantastic!

The people on earth wanted to have a global kingdom that would be so strong that they would be like gods! They were very proud and wicked. What did God think of this? The Bible tells us:
“And the LORD said, Behold, the people [is] one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained [nothing can be stopped] from them, which they have imagined to do.” (Genesis 11:6).

The Lord God was not pleased, because He knew that this global unity would only cause more sin and suffering. So God stepped in and did something that really made the people of the earth realise that GOD was the Lord and ruler of earth, not them:
“Go to, let us go down, and there confound [confuse] their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence [there] upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build [stopped building] the city. “(Genesis 11:7,8).

So God made many languages, and many nations. Today we have many languages and many nations. God does not want mankind to set themselves up to be as mighty as Heaven itself, with men like little gods who make their own laws and rules! Babel means “confusion!”  The people defied God, and wanted to make a big name for themselves! Today mankind wants to do the same thing, to have a global unity that makes its own laws and “ethics.” They want to put away the real God their Creator, and have a new global religion of all peoples. They have banded together under the United Nations!  But God has placed us in different nations with different languages because He does not want the earth to grow strong in unity against Himself.

“The kings of earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel [speak] together, against the Lord, and against his anointed [Christ], saying, Let us break their bands asunder and cast away their cords from us. [God and Christ as making us captives!]
He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision [ God sees how foolish they are].”  (Psalm 2:2-4).
