Despatch Vol. 10:1
THE
AGE, (Melb.Vic.) 25/12/97:
“Lighting the Way for Religious Tolerance.'
Vatican City, Wednesday.
Australian Cardinal Edward Cassidy lit the first ever Hanukkah candle at the Vatican, next to an olive tree commemorating diplomatic ties between Israel and the Holy See.
Yesterday’s event marked the launch of Israel’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Although it mirrored ceremonies in more that 30 countries, the Israeli ambassador to the Holy See said this one was unique.
It marked ‘an important chapter in the historic process of reconciliation between Jews and the Catholic Church’ ambassador Mr Aharon Lopez told the assembled dignitaries,
Cardinal Cassidy lit the candle on behalf of Pope John Paul II. ‘Catholic-Jewish relations have grown side by side with this tree...today they have grown strong and fruitful,’ he said.
The olive tree was planted in Jerusalem when the Second vatican Council declared in 1965 that Jews were not to blame for the death of Jesus Christ - a turning point in centuries of animosity between Catholics and Jews.
In 1995, two years after the Vatican and Israel agreed to establish diplomatic relations, it was transplanted to the Vatican Gardens, where popes often stroll in prayer. - AP.”
Last issue, December 1997, Vol. 9:4, page 27, we gave information in regard to the King James Bible in the United Kingdom, no longer being imported or printed in that country. We have had further data on this. It seems that the KJV Bibles are not being imported, but they are being printed in the UK itself. Praise God for that! Added information came from Bert Plomp of Parkes.
In the item on the Sabbath Keeping, on page 34, last issue, a mistake was made. Under point 12. Jesus Christ was, of course, not “hanging on the Cross” on the Sabbath, His body had not yet risen, but He was removed from the Cross.
