HIGHLIGHTS

IN THE BOOK OF HEBREWS.

The book of Hebrews tells us of the NEW COVENANT, which is greater than any other before it!It is the NEW TESTAMENT, or the WILL of the Testator, Who is none other than the Son of God, the Second Person of the Trinity, Who signed it, substantiated it in His own Blood.

*See again, Hebrews 9:15-18.

If this was a lawyer’s office, our father had died for instance, and we had gathered together to hear a will read, and we were the beneficiaries under that will, we would want to know WHAT we were getting, wouldn’t we?So we should and must know what we have “inherited” in the New Covenant, is the Will and last Testament of the Lord Jesus Christ.

We have accepted His Grace by faith, and have all rights under Universal Law to inherit.

Not only that, but these things under Universal Law given to us can never be reversed, that are

“set in concrete” so to speak. God’s purposes are unchangeable;

He has purposed to grant us these riches:

1.God's purposes are all centered in Christ Jesus.

This is one of the Images reasons that the New Testament's Age of Grace

is vastly superior to the Old Testament's Judaism.

The New Testament shows the Person Who is God's great Purpose in Himself:

"…the unsearchable riches of Christ; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, According to the eternal PURPOSE which he PURPOSED in Christ Jesus our Lord: In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him."(Ephesians 3:8-12).

  1. God's purposes are all for GOOD,
even though He must put down rebellion, sin and evil men

His purposes are IRRESISTIBLE; nothing and no one can ever stop God's plans coming to pass:

"This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations. For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?"(Isaiah 14:26,27).

  1. God's purposes are completely IRREVERSIBLE!
"For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black: because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it."(Jeremiah 4:28).

4.The purposes of the Lord are DETERMINED! The world, like Tyre, might have its honored and adored rich and famous, but GOD loathes the pride and sinfulness of unrepentant men and women and their nations of shame:

"Who hath taken this counsel against Tyre, the crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth? The LORD of hosts hath purposed it, to stain the pride of all glory, and to bring into contempt all the honourable of the earth." (Isaiah 23:9).

1.In God's economy all His purposes are already FULFILLED, so fear not what man can do to you.God has already predestined the whole of the history of this earth:

"(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth)"(Romans 9:11).

  1. God is already VICTORIOUS in His might. No false gods of the nations can defeat the Creator of all, He alone is Truth and to be feared. Every nation and tribe on earth should worship Him alone - one day they will be forced to!
"That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." Philippians 2:10,11:See Psalm 96.

BACK TO OUR INHERITANCE

UNDER THE WILL OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.

In the book of Hebrews the last Will and Testator has been detailed out, like a legal document on earth. It is vastly more than a gift of going to Heaven freely, and sitting on a cloud for eternity playing a harp.

According to Hebrews this is our inheritance under the Covenant:

  1. We inherit salvation under the Will. 1: 14; 2:13.
  2. We inherit lordship in the world to come. 2: 5-10.
  1. We are to participate in God’s house [His family mansion, His home and seat of power
with His Son, the Christ. 3:6, 14

A shadow analogy of this honour could be seen in a family of the Earl of the manor; only his own descendents live in the mansion in England. His especial heir is the first-born son. WE share that first-born son status with Christ Jesus, in God’s house and family arrangement

  1. Our destiny, which we must enjoy even now, is to enter into the REST of God
God rested from His labours in Genesis, in Him we rest as well from ours. 4:1,11.
  1. Under the Will we are GIVEN perfection, which God will enable us to go on in. 6:1.
We are NOT to lay again the Law idea of “repentance from dead works.” ALL our works are dead, (see Psalm 14:1-3) we are now, under the New Covenant, to accept God’s perfection in Christ. We are to do all we can for the glory of God, not in order to saved, but because we ARE saved, having no other motive than God’s glory. This is the only way to do good works, and it is in God’s enabling alone – to His glory.
  1. Under the Will we inherit the promises of God in Christ Jesus. 6:12; 10:36.
We can be like the rebellious young man who has been given, potentially, millions by his father. But he has to toe Dad’s line to be provided for in his present life. But he does not want to go to college, work hard for a degree, be a decent person. He wants to travel to Bermuda and live with dropout druggies. His father will not disinherit him, but he will not fund his excesses either! We must have faith and patience, and make our inherited promises our own – on God’s term though. Not being lazy lay-abouts, God will not fund our excesses by His promises either.
  1. Our inheritance under the Blood-sealed Will of Christ includes gaining the soul!
The soul is our own personhood. We have entered into the Covenant of Christ, by faith not works. We are NOT of those who refused the great Gospel, and because we have received the Saviour, the gift under Christ’s Will is the saving of the SOUL! What a gift this is to be sure!!!!! 10:39.
  1. We inherit citizenship in the Heavenly Country and in the Divinely prepared and thrilling City! GOD also has purposed this through the New Covenant, and this can never be undone. By this Will or Testament we shall reach that Country. It is our inheritance.
11:10, 16; 12:11; 13:14.
  1. God has purposed that under the New Covenant sealed by Blood, that Precious Blood, we shall receive the Kingdom that can never be shaken. 12:28.
ØALL of this is ours by faith alone, through the Grace offered in Christ Jesus.

ØGod is NOT ashamed to be called our God, and has declared it.

Praise His loving and merciful Name.

ØOur destiny is set in concrete, already decreed and purposed. 11:16

ØAll those whom He has saved, in the O.T. period and the N.T. period, are saved by the Blood, and therefore God is not ashamed that they are called His people.

ØBecause he has made a “propitiation” for their sin, and ours. (Romans 3:24,25).

THE FIRST COVENANT FAILED!

The basis covenant under Judaism was the Old Testament Covenant.

The book of Hebrews puts this covenant down, and shows God’s new way in Christ.

Then, obviously the First Covenant, the Old Testament with men, FAILED!

Why was this?

  1. The First was never intended to be more than a provisional anticipation of what was to come. There were “better” things to come, which the book of Hebrews shows us. The Second Covenant achieves perfectly what the First failed to do.
  2. The New Will and Testament of Christ Jesus supersedes the First Covenant under law. This is why we must not be under bondage to the Law again, and so frustrate Grace. Galatians 5:1. (Bondage to Law compared with Grace appendix). The New Covenant, not like the Old, is a FINAL COVENANT with men. There will be nothing beyond it. The book of Hebrews shows us that Christianity not only supersedes Judaism, but it is also GOD’S LAST WORD to men. (See Hebrews 1:1,2). He will say no more on the subject of salvation for fallen men.
  3. The First Covenant failed because the people the Lord brought under it could not and would not fulfill its conditions! They “continued not” in God’s covenant, see 13:7-9. And also, the Covenant under Moses could not and did not provide for men TRUE release from all sin! Therefore men could not have access to God’s presence. 10:1-4.
  4. The very ritual and legalism of the religious observances of Judaism, shown in the Tabernacle, was a graphic witness to the fact that the WAY into the Holy of Holies was not yet opened. 9:8. The true WAY had yet to be manifest. John 14:6.
  5. What was Judaism’s tabernacle then? It was a shadow figure of the “better” that was to come. 9:9. GOD says the Old, as a Covenant was weak and profitless! If I, myself, said that to some people, they would declare I was “anti-Semitic.” I am not saying it, God is. Where does God say that? In Hebrews 7:18. Dare we contradict Him by drifting away back into O.T. law and Judaism, as many are doing today?
  6. Scriptures especially in the books of Romans, Galatians and Hebrews, declare something “NEW” has come from God, this shows in itself that there must be something “OLD” which has been replaced. If you get a new car, you have replaced the old one. You might want to keep the old one for a spare, but if you know it doesn’t work at all, you send it to the scrap heap! God has replaced the Old Covenant with the New, because the Old was weak and profitless. It has been sent to the scrap heap; He does not use it as a spare! We must not mix the too Covenants together to make a “Hebrew Roots” style religion to replace the Covenant of Grace! No one can come to God that way! We are forbidden to do so! Romans 8:3,4.
  7. The Old Covenant was always purposed by the Lord God to be disannulled! The Old was to pass away. The book of Hebrews shows us that: 7:11-19; 8:1-13; 10:5-9. The New Covenant is vastly better and enacted upon better promises. 8:6.

The NEW COVENANT

provides a REAL redemption from sin,

not a shadow one. 9:15.

LEGALISM VERSUS NEW TESTAMENT GRACE IN CHRIST JESUS.

“The Christian’s Secret of a Happy Life”

LAW OBSERVANCE versus

GRACE UNDERCHRIST JESUS.

The following contrasts may help some to under-
stand the difference between these two kinds of
religion, and may also enable them to discover where
the secret of their own experience of legal bondage lies:

Table 1...LAW versus GRACE

The law says, This DO and thou shalt live.
The gospel says, LIVE, and then thou shalt do.
The law says, PAY me that thou owest.
The gospel says, I frankly FORGIVE thee all.
The law says

MAKE you a new heart and a new spirit.

The gospel says, A new heart will I GIVE you, and a new spirit will I put within you.
The law says

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

The gospel says, Herein is love, not that we love God, but that He loved us and sent His son to be the propitiation for our sins.
The law says,

CURSED is every one who continueth not in all things written in the book of the law to do them.

The gospel says

BLESSED is the man whose iniquites are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

The law says

The WAGES of sin is death.

The gospel says, The GIFT of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The law DEMANDS holiness.
The gospel GIVES holiness.
The law says, DO.
The gospel says, DONE.
The law EXTORTS
the unwilling service of a bondman.
The gospel WINS
the loving service of a son and freeman.
The law makes
blessings the result of OBEDIENCE.
The gospel makes

obedience the result of BLESSINGS.

The law places
the day of rest at the end of the week’s work.
The gospel places it at its beginning.

The law says, IF.
The gospel says, THEREFORE.
The law was given for the restraint of the old man.
The gospel was given

to bring liberty to the new man.

Under the law, salvation was WAGES.
Under the gospel, salvation is a GIFT.
